The family of prisoner Qassam Barghouthi posted on social media:
“My brother, the prisoner Qassam Barghouthi, who walks toward a life sentence with the steady steps of one holding onto burning embers, knows full well the nature of this enemy—its deceit, treachery, and brutality. He chose the path of truth, undaunted by how few tread it; he chose it willingly, not out of compulsion—knowingly, not in ignorance—faithfully, not under delusion.
In his name we say, knowing that his name is not included in the deal, that sparing even a single drop of blood from a hungry child in Gaza is far more important than Qassam gaining the freedom he sacrificed for the sake of all the children of this land.”
His mother, Dr. Widad Barghouti, also shared the following message:
“I speak here as the mother of a prisoner who had great hope that her son would be released, and I say this:
The feeling of disappointment weighs heavily on all of us—on us, on our beloved prisoners, and even on the negotiators themselves. But it is unfair to say that the negotiators have abandoned or betrayed the prisoners. These negotiators have lost their families, their homes, and every breath they take has been paid for in blood. They gave their utmost effort, without turning away from those who deserted them and left them in their hardship.
They negotiated with a malicious, criminal, deceitful occupier—one that manipulates names just as it has long manipulated history and geography to justify its crimes. So let us not burden the negotiators more than they are already burdened. We must not deny them their due or wrong them. No one could endure what they have endured.
This is a filthy stage, with a filthy enemy, and mediators who are neither honest nor courageous. They are either complicit with the enemy or too eager to appease it. Were the negotiators representing the resistance in an easy or comfortable position? This is simply a word of truth, nothing more.”
